The Honorable Major Caine,
Colonial Secretary

Ye
40,
Petition of Leung the (Translation).
The person who prepared this petition
is Leung the.
The petition states that she is old and
worn out, having nothing to depend on; and
prays your kindness to allow the release of her son Chun Sun from custody.

My son Chun Sun was taken into
custody on the 24th Dec.
1847.
He was examined, and with Lunyi Arfart and
others was confined in the prison; but
the high authorities again examined (into
the case) and decided that in truth he was
injured by Arpo, who because he was unsuccessful in getting (money) gave false evidence. Lun Arfart
and others, three in number, have been released, but my
son is still in custody.
I pray that you will kindly release (my son) from custody in the prison, so that I, worn out and old in my failing years, may have that on which to depend for support, and not come to be lonely and desolate, without dependence, incessantly sorrowful and weeping. In life and death I shall be grateful for the kindness.

Dated [illegible] of the [illegible]
month of the
moo-shun
2 year.
(from 30th July to 27th August, 1848.)
